Sony Cancels Firesprite's Twisted Metal Game and Other PlayStation Projects

A Twisted Metal project that was in development at Firesprite has been canceled as part of Sony's recent 900-person layoffs announcement, according to Bloomberg.

The project was still in the early stages and had not yet been officially approved by Sony. It was intended to be a live-service game, aligning with Sony's plans to explore multiplayer options for popular PlayStation franchises like Horizon and The Last of Us.

However, as the trend towards live-service games wanes, Sony has shifted its focus away from these types of projects. This cancellation joins the list of scrapped projects, including the online multiplayer game from Sony London that was announced in 2022.

Sony wanted Twisted Metal to go the distance

Twisted Metal, a classic PlayStation franchise, had seen a revival in interest following a live-action TV show adaptation on Peacock. Sony had hoped to capitalize on this momentum with a new game release, especially after the success of The Last of Us remake on PS5.

Sony's strategy of leveraging film and TV adaptations to boost game sales may need reevaluation as the landscape of the gaming industry continues to evolve.
